What is ultrasound gel and why do we use it?
Ultrasound gel is a water-based gel and is used for all types of obstetric, vascular and cardiac ultrasound examinations. Ultrasound gel is usually clear and thick, but is not unpleasantly sticky. When applied to the skin, it does not drip or run off. It adheres lightly to the skin until it is wiped off after the procedure. The most common complaint about ultrasound gel is that it is cold. For this reason, many doctors use special heaters to make the gel a more comfortable temperature before applying it to the patient’s skin.
The ultrasound gel removes the air between the skin and the transducer, allowing the ultrasound waves to travel freely between the body and the transducer.
